Wayne V Shurtleff, 76, of Springville, UT, passed away quietly surrounded by his loving family after a six week battle with severe infection on July 21, 2022. He was born on January 11, 1946, to Dee R. and Ruth V. Shurtleff. He had one sister, Lorna Dee Shurtleff Poeker, (deceased) and a half-brother, Ross Dee Shurtleff of Marysville, Washington. He attended Springville Schools and spent one year on the campus of Utah State University.
He married his High School sweetheart, Susan Williams on August 20, 1965. They had four children: Justin W. Shurtleff (deceased), Stephanie Gasway (Jim), of Reno, NV, Paul R. Shurtleff of Springville; and Daniel W. Shurtleff (Alyssa), Springville. They are the proud grandparents of three beautiful granddaughters and one awesome grandson.
After settling down to married life, Wayne attended Utah Technical School, ultimately becoming a Journeyman Electrician. He worked at U.S. Steel, Geneva Steel Works for 27 years working as an Electrician until the plant closed.
In 1988, he turned his lifelong love of firearms, precision sports, and hunting into a business. He established a custom gunsmithing shop and named it "Skyline Rifle Specialties." His business focused on custom hunting and target rifles. He also loved restoring old firearms to better-than-new condition. His love for woodworking was expressed in custom stock engravings, checkering, inlays, and optics. His skill in woodworking was only matched by the beauty of the wood and the work he crafted. His custom built rifles are true heirloom quality works of art with practical applications.
Wayne was an active member of the Springville Rotary Club and enjoyed the time he served. "Service above self" is the Rotary motto and Wayne took that seriously both as a member of the club and during daily activities. Outside of Rotary, Wayne often helped whomever he could to include friends, neighbors and his family. These actives included mowing lawns in the summer and snow removal in the winter. He was always willing to lend a hand and help with whomever and whenever he could.
Wayne was also an active member of the Garth Killpack Shooting Range. He spent many years supporting their functions and served as THE Range Officer.
A celebration of life will be held for Wayne on September 7th, 2022 at the Springville Rotary Park up Hobble Creek Canyon. Please come share a story about Wayne and pay your respects to the family. The celebration will be held from 3 - 5 PM.
