John Adams

May 21, 1956 — June 22, 2023

John Carl Adams was born May 21, 1956 in Evanston, IL to Thomas and Geneva Adams, the 5th of 6 children. He died unexpectedly at his home in Woodland Hills, UT on June 22, 2023.

John’s family joined the church when he was 7 years old and he was baptized when he turned 8. John graduated from Glenbrook South High School in 1974 and attended BYU until he returned home to work with his family. In 1978, he served a 2-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Alberta, Canada. After returning from his mission, he started working again with his father and brothers for the family residential construction company, Thomas Adams and Sons Construction.

In 1984, he met Jennifer Elaine Smith and on Aug 15, 1986, they were married in the Chicago, IL temple. They lived in Gurnee, IL, where their two children, Sara and Kyle, were born. In 1998, they built a new home in Grayslake IL, continued raising their children, and John continued working with his family in the Chicagoland area. He was especially proud of having helped build the gazebo seen in a scene from the movie “Home Alone”. He has also worked with his family on construction jobs around the country (CA, NM, FL, WI, UT, MN, MI, WY, and IL) while also supporting Jennifer while she completed her schooling to become a nurse.

In October 2016, John and Jennifer moved to Utah to be closer to family and to start another family construction company. In 2019, he attained his Residential Construction license for UT. They bought property in Woodland Hills and moved into their current home in early 2021. John supported Jennifer in her community service as an EMT for Woodland Hills and enjoyed visiting with and helping neighbors.

John has remained active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving as a home teacher, nursery leader, Primary, teacher, Sunday School presidency, 2nd counselor in bishopric, High priest, and various committees. He also supported Jennifer in her callings and his brother Mike when Mike was the ward Scout Leader.

He enjoyed working with his hands, helping family and friends, watching the Red Green Show, listening to Old Time Radio, and watching “How It’s Made” videos on You Tube. John also loved to tell stories, tease and joke with friends and family, and stay busy.

John is survived by his wife, Jennifer (Smith), his daughter Sara, his son, Kyle, his siblings, Judy, Thomas, Cheryl (Penrose), and Michael, plus 37 nieces and nephews and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Geneva, his sister Christine (Condie), his brother-in-law Keith Penrose, and his grandparents.

The family would like to thank the members of the Loafer Canyon Ward, the community of Woodland Hills, and EMS teams from Woodland Hills and Salem for your care and support of John and our family.
