Helen Marie Wilcox Selander passed away on May 4, 2019 in her home in Springville, UT, surrounded by loved ones.
Helen was born to Larry Wilcox and Naomi Lucille Beck on April 21, 1962, in Ogden, Weber County, Utah. She graduated from Roy High School where she developed her vocal talents. She had a beautiful, rich singing voice, and she enjoyed singing with her children and performing in church choirs.
Helen met her sweetheart, James Selander of Ogden, Utah at work while employed at a nutritional supplements company. They were married in the Jordan River Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 24, 1982. Together they had three children they cared for deeply. Helen loved her children and made many sacrifices to stay home and raise them in love and endurance. She supported her children in all of their endeavors and always encouraged them to live their passions.
Helen was deeply compassionate and valued connecting with others. She shared her love by engaging in personal charitable and humanitarian projects, which she did throughout her life. Some of these pursuits included sewing hundreds of blankets for needy families and shelters, donating handmade items to non-profit organizations domestically and abroad, and she found particular fulfillment in assisting a young family in Africa start a business and obtain self-reliance. Despite the pain and struggles accompanying a long battle with terminal cancer, Helen remained positive and optimistic, and put all others before herself until the end.
Helen battled cancer with great faith, fervor, and prayer in order to prolong her time with her family. Although she was initially given less than six months to live, she succeeded in sustaining her life for more than seven years. In that time she saw her children marry and grandchildren be born. Helen and James loved being close to their children and grandchildren during the final period of Helen's life. Despite her condition, she sought diligently and tirelessly to bless their lives in every way she could. She enjoyed supporting and helping care for her grandchildren, and she loved to give meaningful gifts to her family members. Helen was a prayerful student of the scriptures and had a firm testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and it was her greatest desire to one day live eternally with her family.
Helen is survived by her husband, James Gregory Selander; her children, Aaron Selander, Skye (Brian) Watson, and Senica (Nicholas) Walker; her grandchildren Katelyn and Luman Watson; and siblings David (Debra) Wilcox, Paul Wilcox, Bruce Wilcox, and Barbara Drawe.
Helen is preceded in death by her brother, Michael Wilcox, and her parents.
