Barbara Turner Williams joined her husband Bill and other loved ones on the far side of the veil, 3 Feb 2014, in Clearfield, UT. She was born 16 Aug 1926, to Orrin Turner and Afton Snow Turner of Raymond, AB, Canada. Her family roots are deep in the Southern Alberta soil. Her father was a wheat farmer and Calgary Stampede cowboy. Her early years were spent "on the farm". She, with her brother Keith and sister Katherine, traveled horseback to attend a small schoolhouse on the Alberta prairie, and enjoyed the many aspects of farm life.
The family moved to town as the children approached high school age. Barbara was a dedicated piano student and loved music in all it's forms. She especially loved dancing. She graduated high school at 17 planning to become a nurse like her Aunt Norma. Being too young to enter the nursing school in Edmonton, and anxious to begin her training, she went west to Vancouver, BC and trained at St Paul's School of Nursing. She recounted happy times during her training, and made lifelong friends among the other students. After graduation, she chose to work as an orthopedic nurse - an area of specialty she loved.
She met her future husband, Bill at a Church activity. They started as dancing partners, eventually became sweethearts and married 4 Feb 1948 in the Cardston, Alberta Canada Temple. She and Bill emigrated to Boise, ID in 1950. Bill became a full-time student and Barbara worked to support the family for the many years his education required.
After several other moves across the country, Barbara and Bill settled in St George, UT. Barbara worked as head nurse on the orthopedic floor of Dixie Regional Medical Center. She later helped pioneer home health services in Washington County. She loved visiting her patients in their homes and providing the skilled nursing/TLC they needed.
She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served multiple times as a Relief Society president and held many other positions in Church organizations. Throughout her life, her love of music manifested itself as she played piano and organ for uncounted numbers of Church meetings and other gatherings.
Barbara and Bill served 5 LDS missions - two to Yugoslavia - Zagreb and Belgrade. While in Yugoslavia, she helped the then Branch President, Kresimir Cosic, prepare a translation of hymns into Croation for use in Church meetings. She and Bill also served as full-time temple ordinance workers, an 18 month mission in the Family History Library in Salt Lake, and several years in the St George Family History Library. Hers was a life of service to others. Her children cherish her example.
She is survived by her children Cheryl Christine Calkins, Kevin Turner Williams and David Stuart Williams, thirteen grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceeded in death by her parents, her stepmother Anne Snow Turner, her brother Keith and sister Katherine. Interment at Lindquist Memorial Park, 1867 N. Fairfield Rd., Layton, UT.
